About Us
Who are we We are a long-established Scout Group and have our Scout HQ in the grounds of Waingel’s College, accessed from Denmark Avenue. Our Scout Group has two Beaver Colonies, two Cub packs and a large Scout troop, providing scouting to over 100 children. We are supported by a large number of warranted scout leaders, parent helpers and have a thriving Executive Committee. For 2006, girls as well as boys are welcome to join beavers, cubs and scouts. If you are a parent who is interested in Scouting for your child in the Woodley and surrounding area then please get in touch, our contact details are on the Contact Us page. Across Berkshire there are more than a hundred Scout Groups, providing fun, friendship and adventure for more than 6000 young people aged 6 to 25. 5th Woodley Scout Group are part of the Loddon Scout District. We were formed in the 1960’s and provide a Scouting experience to North Woodley and the Surrounding area. We are a successful scout group with over 100 children. We are supported by over 30 warranted leaders and members of the Exec. Everyone is a volunteer and all our subscription money goes towards running the scout group and equipment. We are a registered charity also (Registration number 900400) and the Exec committee are also the charity trustees. Our Policies
We have a number of policies—some of which are how we run the scout group and some are mandatory for scouting. We have summarised the main ones here. Additional information can be provided, please ask your scout leader of contact us via this website. Mixed Scout Group 5th Woodley has traditionally provided scouting for boys. From Jan 2006 we have now accepted boys and girls as members and we currently have girls in Beavers and Cubs. We have male and female leaders and will involve the parents in the arrangements for camping and other activities. Disabled Access / Special Needs Our Scout HQ has an access ramp however we feel the building can be improved in its disabled access. We are currently reviewing our building against guidelines and will be developing an action plan for improved access. We encourage children with special needs to have a scouting experience. Please contact us if there is any area you wish to discuss in confidence. For the Scout disability access checklist for buildings, click here. For Scout Policy on disabled access to buildings, click here. Medication It is important that our leaders are informed as to any medication or allergy that your child has. On joining, membership forms will ask for this information, and this will also be asked for on any camp the child attends. Faiths and Beliefs Scouting is multi-faith. [Policy put here]. or Scout resourcing on spiritual development, click here. Camp Hardship Fund We try to keep camping and subscription costs to a minimum and subsidise subscription fees with fundraising activities. We believe the annual Cub and Scout camps are very beneficial to the children and if the cost of the annual camps is prohibitive please get in touch with your leader as the Scout Group can provide subsidies to help towards the cost on a case-by-case basis. Child Protection It is the policy of The Scout Association to safeguard the welfare of all members by protecting them from physical, sexual and emotional harm. The Scout Association have defined a code of good practice for Adults in scouting and provides training to all Leaders. The policy is called “Putting Children First”, and a yellow card detailing the policy can be found on the notice board at the hut. The policy can also be found here. Any adult who is a helper and all adults who attend the Family Camp must be cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau (called the “CRB Check”). Basically the check is a search performed on the police national computer and this check has to be performed on behalf of the Scout Association regardless as to if you have performed this check before (i.e. if you are a teacher). A form needs to be filled in by you and your signature verified and the forms checked by us. It usually takes 6-weeks for the check to be completed and so it is important for us to organise the family camp well in advance. Fundraising Fundraising is performed to keep down the cost of your subscriptions. Your assistance and time on our fundraising events is expected as this shares the load. We make these events as fun as possible and a spare hour on a stall or supporting our events is greatly appreciated.
